2025 Early Childhood Teacher Training Program

Early Childhood Teacher Training Programme

Overview

In May 2025, in partnership with the Ghana Education Service Early Childhood Unit, organized a 10-day Early Childhood Teacher Training Programme for teachers from public basic schools in the South Akwapim District. This initiative was developed in response to the persistently low Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) performance among pupils in the area — with the average aggregate score declining from 41 in 2023 to 40 in 2024. These results highlight a fundamental challenge: weak foundational skills in literacy and numeracy among early-grade learners.

The Fund believes that improving educational outcomes begins with strengthening the foundation — by equipping early childhood teachers with the right tools, pedagogies, and confidence to nurture young learners.

Objective of the Initiative

The training aimed to:

  • Build the capacity of early childhood teachers in active learning and play-based pedagogy.
  • Strengthen teachers’ ability to teach foundational literacy and numeracy.
  • Encourage innovation in classroom practice using locally available teaching and learning materials.
  • Promote consistency and collaboration among teachers across the participating schools.

Participating Schools

Teachers were drawn from sixteen (16) public basic schools across the South Akwapim District, including:

  • Adenkrebi MA JHS
  • Adusa (1) & (2) JHS
  • Agyemanti M/A Basic
  • Ayim M/A Basic
  • Berekuso (A) & (B) D/A
  • Fidelity Juvenile College
  • Gyankama Methodist
  • Kitase M/A JHS
  • Konkonuru Methodist

  • Theocracy Complex School
  • Osbin International School
  • Peduase Methodist Basic
  • The Learning Giants
  • Covenant Presby School
  • Fidelity Juvenile Basic School
  • Jachin Boaz Home

Each school nominated at least two Nursery and Kindergarten teachers to participate in the full program.

Training Activities

The programme was facilitated by trainers from the Ghana Education Service’s Early Childhood Ga West Education directorate and spanned three phases:

Phase 1 – Intensive Pedagogy Sessions: Teachers were introduced to the Active Learning and Learning Through Play framework, child-centered approaches, classroom management, and developmentally appropriate lesson planning.

Phase 2 – Practical Application: Participants implemented the new techniques in their classrooms with guidance from Ga West Education directorate coordinators.

Phase 3 – Review and Feedback (3 days): A follow-up session was held to assess the implementation, share challenges, and refine teaching strategies.

Monitoring and Evaluation

A monitoring visit was conducted one month after the training to observe classroom practices, provide coaching support, and collect feedback from teachers and headteachers. This evaluation helped the Fund measure the impact of the program and identify areas for continuous improvement.

Expected Impact

By investing in teacher capacity, the Fund aims to:

  • Improve reading fluency and numeracy comprehension among early-grade pupils.
  • Strengthen teacher motivation and confidence.
  • Reduce the long-term performance gap reflected in BECE results.
  • Contribute to the overall mission of the Fund — building stronger educational foundations for children in South Akuapim.
